When we talk of India’s struggle against the British rule, there are many freedom fighters, activists, revolutionaries whose names come to mind. One such hero of India’s freedom movement was Bhagat Singh. At an age when most of us are fighting for superbikes, he was the guy who was fighting for his nation. Born in the year 1907, this young blood was hanged at the age of 23, but his heroic stories are still remembered by millions.
Also famous by the name Shahid -E- Azam Bhagat Singh, he is a true inspiration, and his contribution to the freedom movement can never be forgotten. All of us are very much familiar with him. In this article, we are going to shed some more light on the life of Bhagat Singh and will discuss a few facts about him.
Let’s begin…
● He was born in a Sikh family of Punjab (present-day in Pakistan). He was fond of reading books and was a brilliant student during his school days.
● He stopped his schooling at the age of 13 and got involved in various revolutionary movements in order to free the country from the claws of colonial rule. He was also an active participant in the non-cooperation movement.
● When he was just 23 years old, he was sentenced to the hanged after he was found guilty in the murder of a British officer.
● After the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, Bhagat Singh was very much affected by this awful incident. He went to that place to take some mud which was red with the blood of Indians. He kept that mud in a bottle and used to worship that mud every day.
● He was not only against the Colonial rule but also against other social evils like the class division.
● He was very much inspired by the ideologies of Marxist and anarchists and decided to serve his life for the mother Nation from a very young age. Not only was he a great revolutionary, but he was also very much active in extracurricular activities and had excellent acting skills and performed many plays like ‘Rana Pratap’ during his college years.
● From a young age, the feeling of resistance against the British rule and the goal of making the country free from the Britishers and running them away was set in his mind. Just when he was 8, he used to think about planting guns in the fields so that he could use them to fight the Colonial rule. Unlike other children of his age who were interested in toys, he was involved in always talking about guns and ideas of freeing India.

● His parents wanted him to get married and settle, but he ran away and told that he couldn’t marry as long as the Britishers are there in the country as if he does so then, his bride will be his death.
● Very much inspired by the socialist revolutions of Lenin, he got associated with the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association. He used to believe that he can be killed but his thought, his ideas will always be there.
● In his last letter, he demanded that he should not be hanged but should be put in the Cannon’s mouth instead. This shows the degree of bravery that he had.
● The bomb that he used in the Central Assembly was not very dangerous and made of less explosive material as his aim was not to cause injury to anyone but wanted to give a message to the Britishers that they cannot accept everything without any resistance.
● The slogan was given by Maulana Hasrat Mohani “Inquilab Zindabad”, was popularized by Bhagat Singh. When he was in jail, he went on a 14 day fast, but the fantastic thing was that even while being on fasting, he continued doing all his routine work.
● One hour prior to the official timing of his hanging, this brave was hanged on 23rd march 1931 which set the whole country in mourning for many days. Another fact about his execution is that it was inspected by a judge as not a single magistrate agreed for the inspection.
● It is said that this young pride of India was smiling when he was about to be hanged. Even when his mother visited him in jail, he was laughing while talking to her, which shocked everyone about how brave he was.
The Legacy that this great man left behind him will always be remembered and will be sung for generations.
